WIAW is a tricky thing. When we post pictures of our eats, people are bound to compare them to what they already know. I know I do it. If I see someone living on salads, I immediately assume they aren’t eating enough because for me personally, I know a salad alone doesn’t have enough in it to give me a balanced meal. But what I forget is that other people put cheese or nuts or dressing and other, more filling toppings than I use. I have to remind myself that there’s always more to the story. I know there is for me.
The thing is, what is a normal day? Is it one where I eat only “clean” foods (I hate that word)? Or is it one where I show something special I ate, like a fancy lunch at my office? The thing is, no matter which I choose, there is going to be some questioning over it. Lately, if you’ve noticed, food has not been a main focus on this blog. I’m trying not to make it some special thing in my life. It’s just food. I thought it might be interesting to compare a “typical” day to some of the crazier foods I’ve showcased on here before.
Breakfast:
Normal- A bagel with butter and gas station hot chocolate is a typical breakfast for me.
Special- Pancakes covered with whipped cream and 2-3 hot chocolates, also loaded with whipped cream, are not normal, but I’m more likely to highlight this because it’s more exciting.
Lunch:
Normal- A sandwich or more recently, snacky foods like popcorn, kashi bars, grapes, veggies, apples
Special- A wrap from my favorite deli, a meal out with my internship, or basically any lunch not prepared at home. This is the meal I struggle with the most so I’m rarely found branching out but it does happen on a rare occasion.
Dinner:
Normal- A grilled chicken salad, cheese tortellini, a home-cooked meal from my mom
Special- Baked mac and cheese, an entire pizza to myself, or another meal out.
Dessert:
Normal- TJ’s dark chocolate, cookies and cream ice cream/froyo at home
Special- A giant sundae, homemade cookies, 16 ounces of froyo, milkshake, giant slabs of cake, any restaurant dessert.
Clearly, I don’t eat those “special” foods every day. In actuality, almost all of these pictures were taken freshman and sophomore year in college. Two-three years ago. These days, I go out for something more elaborate once or twice a semester. Sometimes I wonder, though, what people who read my blog think, because I tend to talk about the special food far more frequently than my everyday meals. Why wouldn’t I? I doubt anybody really cares about the chocolate caramel wedges I eat at night, or how to boil a pot of pasta. I’m just not that exciting.
Do you like to show what’s normal or “special” on your blog?
